Joint Statement - Minister for Foreign Affairs, The Hon Alexander Downer, and Minister for Trade, The Hon Mark Vaile
Expansion of Australia's Secure Diplomatic Communications Network
We are pleased to announce an additional $9.4 million to ensure the Government continues to use a state-of-the-art, secure network for its international diplomatic communications.
The 2003-04 Budget provides the additional funding to ensure information vital to Australia’s national interests in an uncertain global security environment continues to be communicated securely and reliably between Australia and its diplomatic network.
The network also provides a vital platform for crisis management systems, especially consular systems, implemented in response to the 11 September and Bali terrorist attacks.
The network covers locations in Australia and overseas, including the South Pacific, Asia, the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade will receive the additional funding for the enhancement of the global secure communications network through the use of more secure and efficient information technologies.
