Australia welcomes passage of legislation in Solomon Islands

I am delighted at the celerity with which the Solomon Islands Parliament has today passed legislation enabling police, military and other personnel from the Pacific region to assist Solomon Islands.

This is a most welcome development. The legislation was passed unanimously, in a clear demonstration of broad community support for the program of strengthened assistance which has been discussed between Solomon Islands and other members of the Pacific Islands Forum during recent weeks.

Once the legislation enters into force, it opens the way for police and other personnel to be deployed to Solomon Islands and to carry out law enforcement functions. This will mark the beginning of a better future for Solomon Islands.
