Australia-Fiji Bilateral Talks
Fiji's Foreign Affairs Minister Kaliopate Tavola and I have today held constructive talks on a issues of mutual concern to our countries, confirming our close and productive relationship.
During the talks, Mr Tavola and I signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Counter-Terrorism, paving the way for enhanced cooperation in this critical area.
I also announced that Australia would provide $10 million over three and a half years to complement Fiji's efforts to strengthen its law and justice sector. Five Australian advisers will arrive in Fiji next month to assist in the areas of courts, prisons, police and the Justice Department and to determine the priorities for financial assistance.
The maintenance of law and order and respect for the rule of law are crucial for peace and stability. Australia will work closely with Fiji Ministries and local groups to implement the $10 million program in a way that benefits the whole justice system.
Mr Tavola and I also discussed a range of political, trade and economic issues of interest to both countries.
