Nepal Ceasefire Agreement
I welcome the announcement of a ceasefire between the Government of Nepal and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist).
The Maoists have been waging a seven-year insurgency during which thousands of people have been killed.
The ceasefire is an important first step towards what we hope can be a permanent peace in Nepal.
The ceasefire gives cause for new optimism that peace can be achieved with a recognition on both sides of the need to move forward and end the pain and suffering caused by this conflict.
I strongly urge all parties to maintain their commitment to the ceasefire and work towards a settlement.
