Emergency Aid to Indonesia
I am pleased to announce today emergency assistance to Indonesia's
health services in Bali worth $300,000 AUD.
This is in addition to the assistance such as IV fluids, analgesics,
bandages and blood provided over the past two days. This help has
included two pallets of Defence medical stores, 300 kilograms of medical
supplies from a civilian company and aeromedical evacuation supplies.
Australian agencies, including the ADF and my Department, have now
evacuated the Australians seriously injured in the bombing.
We recognise that Indonesians have also suffered in this atrocity.
Health services in Bali are under heavy pressure as they treat Indonesians
injured by this callous act. Their stocks of essential medical supplies
have been seriously depleted or in some cases exhausted.
Australia, through AusAID, is providing humanitarian assistance worth
$300,000 AUD to Indonesia to aid hospitals in Bali and the Indonesian
Red Cross treating victims of the 12 October bombing. The assistance
includes medical consumables from Australia, bandages and medicines
for burns treatment, and a cash grant to assist in replenishing medical
supplies.
I want to acknowledge the very great work done by Australian volunteers
throughout this terrible crisis, particularly doctors and nurses who
have worked tirelessly in hospitals helping the injured.
I also want to thank Indonesian medical workers who have helped Australian
victims in the most trying circumstances.
NOTE: Mr Downer is in Bali today, with Justice Minister, Senator
Ellison, assessing the emergency response and investigation efforts
into the Bali atrocity.
