Australia Ratifies Terrorist Financing Convention
Australia today has ratified the Convention for the Suppression of
the Financing of Terrorism, in line with Australia's continuing commitment
to global counter-terrorism measures.
The Convention dramatically increases the effectiveness of global
criminal prohibitions on terrorist financing and helps prevent terrorist
organisations obtaining resources to support their activities.
Australia has had legislation in place to criminalise the financing
of hostile acts against foreign States by Australians, or persons
using Australia as a base, since the 1970s but there has been limited
international assistance. By becoming a Party to the Convention,
Australia can now obtain international cooperation in suppressing
terrorist financing.
As well as reinforcing Australia's anti-terrorism efforts, our participation
in the Convention is consistent with United Nations Security Council
decisions to suppress terrorist financing, including Security Council
Resolution 1373.
This ratification means Australia is now party to 11 of the 12 United
Nations terrorism conventions. Australia is also considering becoming
a party to the remaining convention - the Convention on the Marking
of Plastic Explosives (MARPLEX).
