It gives me great pleasure to congratulate Xanana Gusmao on his
election as President of East Timor. A key figure in East Timor's
recent history, this election will see Mr Gusmao continue his leadership
role and work as a prominent political figure. Australia looks
forward to working with Mr Gusmao in his new role as President.
I also wish to congratulate the people of East Timor for a peaceful
election. The high level of participation in the election - more
than 86 per cent - is a demonstration of the goodwill and interest
the East Timorese have for the democratic future of their new nation.
This is greatly encouraging. I applaud the Independent Electoral
Commission and UNTAET for their respective roles in making this
election proceed in a transparent and fair manner.
On the eve of independence, this election represents one of the
last steps towards the establishment of the political framework
for the new nation of East Timor. It is a significant reminder
of the progress that has been made since the ballot in 1999. Australia
looks forward to the continuation of our close and cooperative relationship
and to working with the people of East Timor to independence on
20 May and beyond.
