Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alexander Downer
FA184 / 17 December 2001
Solomon Islands: New Prime Minister
The new Government faces a daunting task in reversing the country's recent decline which, in addition to serious law and order problems, contributed to virtual economic collapse. I take this opportunity to encourage Sir Allan and his Government to work resolutely and quickly to address the political, economic and security challenges facing the country. A commitment to transparency, the restoration of law and order and the adoption of responsible economic polices are vital to arrest the current deterioration and establish conditions for recovery. Such steps will also be important to ensure the support of the international donor community which is vital if Solomon Islands is to return to peace and stability.
I wish Sir Allan well in tackling the challenges ahead. Australia is ready to support generously a program aimed at restoring good governance and sound economic management to Solomon Islands. I hope to visit Solomon Islands early in the new year, with New Zealand Foreign Minister Phil Goff, to discuss with Sir Allan and his Government how we might assist in getting Solomon Islands squarely on a path to national recovery.
