Replacement of Secure Diplomatic Communications Network
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alexander Downer, and the Minister for Trade, Mark Vaile, today announced measures as part of the Budget to ensure the Government would continue to utilise state-of-the-art technology in its communications systems.
The 2001-02 Budget provides additional funding to contribute to the replacement of the secure whole-of-government communications network.
In announcing the decision the Ministers said this project would provide opportunities for the Government to further utilise cutting edge information technology and innovation.
Mr Downer and Mr Vaile said the new funding would ensure that information vital to the advancement of Australias national interests continued to be transmitted cost-effectively, quickly and securely between Australias diplomatic and consular missions overseas and government in Canberra.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) will receive $35.9 million over three years for the implementation of the Secure Australian Telecommunications and Information Network.
The funding also provides for phase two of a program to introduce satellite communications technology to some overseas posts in locations with poor telecommunications infrastructure.
