Australian television service in the Asia-Pacific region

I am disappointed that the Seven Network has decided to withdraw its proposal to the Government to provide an enhanced television service to Asia and the Pacific. This decision is entirely for commercial reasons and Seven has expressed warm appreciation for the Government's assistance during recent discussions with Seven on a possible new service.

The Government continues to believe that it is in the national interest that there should be an Australian television service in the region, projecting modern and informative images of Australia. To this end, the Government is considering urgently other possible options for the provision of a service. The Government will be prepared to provide financial assistance to an appropriate service.
