Yugoslavia

I warmly welcome the fact that Slobodan Milosevic has publicly acknowledged the victory of Dr Kostunica in the Yugoslav presidential elections held on 24 September. Dr Kostunica and the people of Yugoslavia are to be congratulated for their courage and determination in returning their country to democracy.

President Milosevic must not play any further role in Yugoslav political life and must appear before the International War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague to answer the charges of war crimes against him.

Australia looks forward to building closer ties with Yugoslavia, particularly bearing in mind the significant Yugoslav community in Australia. Australia will be moving to lift sanctions against Yugoslavia, consistent with the steps taken by the European Union and the United States. Australia currently maintains a targeted visa ban and financial sanctions against Yugoslavia.
