New Lord Mayor for Adelaide
As Foreign Minister I would like to congratulate Mr Alfred Huang on his election to the position of Lord Mayor of Adelaide.
The election of Mr Huang, who was born in China, to the position of Lord Mayor demonstrates the diversity of both Adelaide's and Australia's political culture. It also provides recognition of the considerable contribution made to Adelaide by Australians of Chinese descent.
Mr Huang's election presents a further opportunity for Adelaide to be successfully portrayed as a vibrant, diverse city with strong people-to-people links with the Asian region. I welcome the Lord Mayor-elect's early indications that he intends to promote Adelaide in this way.
Successfully expanding the links Adelaide has with the region will provide important economic opportunities, particularly in areas such as education, and will help encourage investment into the city and South Australia. A less tangible though nonetheless significant outcome of these activities will be the enhancement of the cultural and people-to-people ties between Adelaide and the Asian region.
I wish Mr Huang every success in his challenging new role.
