MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS
ALEXANDER DOWNER

FA 124

31 October 1999

Visit to the United States of America

I will visit the United States of America from 31 October - 4 November for discussions on East Timor with the United Nations, as well as the US Administration for the annual Australia-United States Ministerial Consultations (AUSMIN).

In New York, 1-2 November, I will hold discussions with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the Secretary-General's Special Representative for East Timor, Sergio de Mello, who will head the UN Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET), and other UN officials.

Australia remains firmly committed to the success of UNTAET, and my visit to New York will be a timely opportunity to reinforce Australia's ongoing support for UN efforts in East Timor.

In Washington I will participate in the annual Australia-United States Ministerial Consultations (AUSMIN) to be held on 3-4 November, with my ministerial colleague, the Minister for Defence, John Moore .

AUSMIN is our peak consultative body on foreign, defence and security policy. It provides an opportunity for both sides to exchange views and assessments on key current regional and global issues, and to explore practical ways of advancing our bilateral relationship. This year's meeting will be particularly timely in the light of recent developments in Indonesia and East Timor.

I look forward to strengthening further the alliance relationship between Australia and the US through consultations with our counterparts, the United States Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, and Secretary of Defense, William Cohen.

AUSMIN 99 will underscore the importance of Australia-US cooperation to the success of INTERFET's deployment in East Timor and the establishment of UNTAET. The meeting will reaffirm the strong commitment of both sides to a productive, mutually beneficial relationship with Indonesia as it continues the historic transition to democracy.

Other important areas for discussion will be bilateral defence cooperation, global security and trade and economic cooperation, including bilateral trade issues.

Developments in our region over the past 12 months, including close Australian-US cooperation with other regional countries in INTERFET's deployment, have demonstrated once again the enduring vitality and flexibility of the Australia-US alliance.
