AUSTRALIA-INDONESIA INSTITUTE EDITORS' CONFERENCE
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Gareth Evans, announced today that the Australia-Indonesia Institute will be hosting a meeting of senior Indonesian and Australian editors in Sydney on 18 May 1995.
The meeting has evolved from a decision by the Australia-Indonesia Institute to devote more of its resources to senior level media exchanges and to encourage wider and more serious reporting of each country in the other.
It is expected editors from both countries attending the meeting will establish personal contact and exchange views on a range of matters including how their respective newspapers work in terms of relations with government, editorial content and circulation. The exchange should provide more insight for the editors into the political, economic and social dimensions of their neighbouring country.
Editors will also evaluate whether there might be cooperative possibilities between publications in each country.
Since its inception in 1989 the Institute has played an important part in the growth in people-to-people and institutional contacts between Australia and Indonesia, including in artistic, educational, media, professional and sporting exchanges. This latest initiative ensures that the Institute continues to play a constructive role on relevant issues affecting Australia's relations with Indonesia.
A list of participating editors from both countries is attached.
