Australia Abroad Council and the Sydney 2000 Olympics

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Gareth Evans, will chair the annual meeting of the Australia Abroad Council on Wednesday 29 November 1995.

Senator Evans will open proceedings at 9.30 am, at the Hyatt Hotel in Canberra.

This year's meeting will focus on the Sydney Olympics, which offers a unique opportunity to promote Australia's image around the world.

Senator Evans will be joined by the Minister for Trade, Senator Bob McMullan, the Minister for Development Cooperation and Pacific Island Affairs, Mr Gordon Bilney, and more than 40 public and private sector leaders. They will look at how Australia should capitalise on the Games to foster tourism, the arts, trade and sport over the next five years.

The Government established the Australia Abroad Council in 1990 to project a contemporary image of Australia overseas. The Council taps the expertise of the government and private sectors to coordinate promotions of Australian society, culture, education, technology and the economy.

This year's meeting will also evaluate several key activities, including next year's Australia India - New Horizons promotion, Market Australiaís Innovative Australia campaign, and the Australian Tourist Commission's Brand Australia campaign.
