SENATOR EVANS TO ATTEND 50th SESSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Gareth Evans, leaves Australia today to lead Australia's delegation the 50th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UNGA 50) in New York from 26 September to 4 October.

Senator Evans will address the General Assembly on 2 October.

UNGA 50 provides Australia with an opportunity to gather the widest possible support base of member countries for a resolution opposing nuclear testing programs as well as support for the consensus adoption of a resolution calling for the conclusion by 1996 of a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).

Australia's other objectives at UNGA 50 include building support for Australia's candidature for election to the UN Security Council, continuing efforts towards reform and reinvigoration of the UN as it approaches the turn of the century, and enhancement of the effectiveness of the UN's handling of social and economic development challenges faced by developing countries and its security role.

In addition, Senator Evans is scheduled to conduct bilateral meetings with more than 50 Foreign Ministers also attending UNGA 50, including US Secretary of State Mr Warren Christopher, Indonesian Foreign Minister Mr Ali Alatas and Malaysian Foreign Minister Abdullah Badawi.

Following UNGA 50, Senator Evans will visit Madrid on 5 October for discussions with Spain in its capacity as current President of the European Union. The European Union is a major force in international affairs and the twice yearly EU Presidency Consultations provide an important opportunity for Australia to exchange views on a wide range of foreign and security policy issues and seek to influence EU polcy-making.

While in Madrid, Senator Evans will also have discussions on bilateral issues with Foreign Minister Solana.

Senator Evans returns to Australia on 6 October.
